5-Day Morocco Coastal Surf & Essaouira Tour from Marrakech

Atlantic Coast, Marrakech, Morocco Atlantic Coast, Taghazout Bay Private · Tailored $670/person

Overview

Five days. Four nights. Marrakech, the Atlantic surf coast at Taghazout, the Portuguese-influenced port town of Essaouira, and back to Marrakech.

This is the budget, sociable, ages-18-to-35 version of the Morocco starter trip — a shared small-group adventure for travellers who care more about the surf, the rooftop bars, the new travel friends, and the price tag than about a private Land Cruiser. If you want private, our 5-day Casa-to-Marrakech tour (WPCMM5) is the alternative at $1,099. This one is $369.

Day 1 is your arrival in Marrakech and a 4:00 PM welcome meeting at the hotel. Your evening is free for Djemaa el-Fna — one of the largest public squares in the world, where henna painters, storytellers, performers, and street food stalls take over the open space after dark.

Day 2 is the drive south to Taghazout — a laidback fishing village turned surf town on the Atlantic, about 4 hours by group vehicle from Marrakech. The waters stay warm year-round and the surf is good for both beginners and experienced riders.

Day 3 is a morning yoga session followed by a half-day surfing course at the camp. If you already surf, this is refinement time. If you don't, this is when you learn.

Day 4 is the road north to Essaouira with a stop at a female-led argan oil cooperative on the way. In Essaouira a local guide walks you through the medina, the old Jewish mellah, the port, and the skala sea wall, followed by a Moroccan street food tasting — harira soup, mesman flatbread, sweets, olive oil, honey.

Day 5 is the return to Marrakech by shared public bus (about 3 hours). No activities on arrival; the day is yours.

Everything is shared. Your group of up to 16 travellers shares the same vehicle, the same surf camp dormitories on Days 2 and 3, the same surf lesson, the same yoga mat, and the same public bus seat back. That's the point — the group is the experience.

Best for: travellers aged 18 to 35 who want a sociable first taste of Morocco without spending Land Cruiser money. Solo travellers, backpackers, gap-year travellers, anyone for whom new travel friends are part of the trip.

Not the right fit if: you're outside the 18–35 age range (the booking system will not accept you), you cannot share multi-share dormitories with other travellers of the same gender, or you want a private tour with private accommodation throughout. For those needs, see our private 5-day WPCMM5 or our 4-day Sahara WPMMM4.

Hakim founded Morocco Way in 2014 with one rule: every guide is born in the region they show you. Your Marrakech welcome host, your Taghazout surf instructor, your Essaouira walking guide, your argan cooperative women — all local, all Moroccan.

Day by Day

1
Day 1
Marrakech arrival, welcome meeting, Djemaa el-Fna evening

Salaam Alaikum. Welcome to Morocco. Day 1 is your arrival in Marrakech.

The trip begins with a welcome meeting at 4:00 PM at the hotel. It's important you attend — we collect insurance details and next-of-kin information at this meeting. If you're going to be late, let us know via the WhatsApp number you'll have received with your booking confirmation. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for the exact meeting room.

If you want a full day in Marrakech before the trip starts, arrive a day early — we can book the extra hotel night for you, just ask when booking.

After the welcome meeting, your evening is your own. Most travellers head to Djemaa el-Fna, one of the largest public squares in the world. As the sun sets, the square comes alive — henna painters, performers, storytellers, and rows of street food stalls. The smells of grilling meat, fresh bread, sweet pastries, mint tea, freshly squeezed orange juice. The adventurous order snail soup. Marrakech has the country's best rooftop bars — find one with a view over the square and order a cocktail.

Night: hotel in Marrakech (1 night, Gueliz district or similar central location, en-suite room, twin-share basis). No meals included on Day 1.

If your flight arrives after the 4:00 PM welcome meeting, you must still attend a make-up briefing on Day 2 morning before departure. Tell us your flight number when booking.

2
Day 2
Marrakech to Taghazout (Atlantic surf coast)

Breakfast at the hotel, then the drive south-west to Taghazout. About 4 hours by shared group vehicle through the Atlas foothills and out to the Atlantic coast.

Taghazout is a former fishing village that became one of Morocco's best-known surf towns over the last twenty years. The waters stay warm year-round (around 18–22°C even in winter), and the surf is good for both beginners and experienced riders — beach breaks, reef breaks, and point breaks all within walking distance of the camp.

The afternoon is yours. The local beach is in front of the camp; coffee shops and small restaurants line the main road; the sand is good for reading, walking, or sleeping in the sun. Ask your trip leader for the best seafood spots for dinner — most travellers eat at a beachfront place where the day's catch is grilled in front of you.

Night: surf camp in Taghazout (1 night, multi-share dormitory accommodation, single-gender rooms, shared facilities). Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at your own expense.

Note on accommodation: this is not twin-share. The surf camp uses single-gender multi-share dormitories — typically 4 to 8 beds per room. Travellers on the same booking (couples, friends of mixed gender) may be split between rooms. This is the surf camp's standard setup and we cannot change it. If you cannot share, see our private 5-day WPCMM5 instead.

3
Day 3
Taghazout: yoga, half-day surf course, free afternoon

Day 3 is the active day. The morning starts with an hour of yoga at the surf camp — gentle stretching, balance work, breath control. The exercises directly serve the next session: surfing and yoga share the same core skills of concentration, flexibility, and balance.

After yoga, the half-day surf course. If this is your first time on a board, the instructor takes you through the basics on the sand first — paddling, the pop-up, the stance — before you take a beginner board into the white water. If you already surf, this is refinement time; the instructor will work on whatever you want to improve, from reading the break to bottom turns.

The lesson runs roughly 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. By early afternoon you're back at the camp. The rest of the day is yours — surf again if your arms still work, swim, lounge on the sand, walk into the centre of Taghazout for coffee or a sunset photograph.

Night: second night at the surf camp (multi-share dormitory, same setup as Day 2). Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at your own expense.

Included activities today: 1-hour yoga class, half-day surfing course (board and wetsuit rental included).

4
Day 4
Taghazout to Essaouira via women's argan cooperative, walking tour, street food tasting

Get up early if you want sunrise, then breakfast at the camp and the drive north to Essaouira. About 4 hours along the Atlantic coast road.

On the way, the female-led argan cooperative — a working operation where Amazigh women crack the argan nuts by hand (an ancient technique only women do, the right grip and rhythm coming from years of practice), roast the kernels in a clay oven, and grind them with a stone mill to produce oil for cosmetic and culinary use. You watch the full process, taste both the oil and the paste, and can buy small bottles if you want. The proceeds support the women working there.

Essaouira is on the Atlantic at the point where the medina walls meet the sea. The name translates as "little picture" — get your camera ready. The town is whitewashed walls with bright blue shutters, Portuguese-built sea ramparts, working fishing port, art galleries, wood workshops, and three centuries of Portuguese, British, and Jewish influences mingling in the architecture.

A local guide walks you through the medina, the old Jewish mellah, the port, and the skala — the sea wall lined with brass cannons facing the Atlantic. About 90 minutes on foot.

The day ends with a street food tasting through the medina. Harira (the spiced lentil-and-chickpea soup eaten across Morocco at iftar), mesman (a layered flatbread cooked on a griddle), Moroccan sweets, olive oil from the south, and Essaouira honey from the argan-tree region.

Night: hotel in the Essaouira medina (1 night, en-suite room, twin-share basis). Breakfast included; lunch and dinner during the street food tasting included; no dinner separately.

Included activities today: women's argan oil cooperative visit, Essaouira walking tour with a local guide, Essaouira street food tasting.

5
Day 5
Essaouira to Marrakech by shared bus, trip ends

Breakfast at the Essaouira hotel, then check out and head to the bus station. The return to Marrakech is by shared public bus — about 3 hours, comfortable seats, air-conditioned. You travel with your group and with other Moroccan and international passengers; chat with locals if you want, or watch the coast turn into the inland plain through the window.

No activities are planned after arrival in Marrakech. You can leave the trip from the bus station, walk back to the hotel with your trip leader, or arrange your own onward plans. Most travellers either fly out this afternoon or stay an extra night in Marrakech.

If you'd like to extend the day with an optional activity, we can book a Marrakech cooking class (about MAD 640 per person for the Tajine Cookery Class, 3 hours including a market visit and a meal in a riad with a local family), a luxury hammam (around MAD 750), the Cascades d'Ouzoud day tour (MAD 2,207), a hot air balloon ride (MAD 1,999), or a medina cycling tour (from MAD 438). Tell us at booking and we'll arrange it for the right time.

Breakfast at the Essaouira hotel included. Lunch and dinner on Day 5 at your own expense.

Important note: book your flight home for after 4:00 PM today, to allow time for any bus delays and the airport transfer.

Frequently Asked

Is Morocco a Safe Destination?

Morocco has one of the lowest crime rates in the world and, compared to the US and Europe, is considered a very safe destination. Moroccan people are known for their hospitality and they will make you feel very welcomed, for more information on the topic contact us and we’ll provide you with some personal single-traveller experiences.

Is There any Dress Code for Women Visiting Morocco?

No. You may wear whatever you feel comfortable in, we only have one exception on tours of the Mosque like Hassan II. To enter you would need to dress conservatively as you would in a church (no shorts, tanks tops, etc.).

As in any country you should use direction with your attire if you want to avoid unwanted attention.

What currencies can I exchange in Morocco?

US Dollars, Sterling and Euros are readily exchangeable. We recommend you take a mixture of cash and credit cards. Scottish bank notes and Australian dollar travellers cheques and cash are NOT normally accepted in Morocco.

The form of the meeting at the airport, where?

With accurate information on the schedule of your arrival, our guide and our driver await you at the customs exit at the airport, with a sign with your name and first name. It’s always easy, this appointment. In case of concern, you can contact us by phone with our contact information noted in our emails. We are always at your disposal 24 hours a day

Why is this trip ages 18 to 35 only?

The trip is designed for younger travellers in pace, accommodation style, and social dynamic. The Days 2 and 3 surf camp uses single-gender multi-share dormitories (typically 4 to 8 beds per room) — not a private-room setup. The group dynamic is sociable and assumes everyone is broadly the same generation, often travelling solo or with one friend. The booking system enforces the age cap. If you're outside that range, see our private 5-day WPCMM5 ($1,099, Casa to Marrakech via Sahara) or our 4-day Sahara WPMMM4 ($899, Marrakech round trip) — same value of Morocco, structured for private travel.

What is the surf camp accommodation actually like?

Single-gender multi-share dormitories, typically 4 to 8 beds per room. Bunk beds, shared bathrooms (some camps have one or two private bathrooms shared across the room, others have separate male and female bathroom blocks down the hall). Linens provided. Lockable storage for valuables. Wi-Fi in the common area. Hot water at most hours (sometimes limited if the whole camp showers at the same time). Outdoor common area, hammocks, small swimming pool at some properties. This is a working surf camp, not a hotel — the vibe is sociable, the rooms are functional. Couples or friends of mixed genders on the same booking will be split between rooms (no exceptions). If that's not for you, this trip isn't either.

I've never surfed. Will I actually catch a wave?

Almost certainly yes, on a beginner board in white water. The Day 3 half-day course starts on the sand: how to paddle, how to pop up, how to stand. Then into shallow water with foam boards designed for first-timers. Most beginners stand and ride a small wave within their first session — not always cleanly, but enough to know what the sport feels like. If you don't catch one on Day 3, you can rent a board on Day 2 afternoon or Day 3 afternoon and try again (~MAD 200 per session). Taghazout's waters are warm year-round; the surf is more forgiving than colder breaks.

How does the group ride from Marrakech to Taghazout work?

A shared group vehicle (typically a minibus seating 12 to 16) departs the Marrakech hotel after breakfast on Day 2 and drives roughly 4 hours south-west along the Atlas foothills and out to the coast. One scheduled break for fuel, toilet, and a stretch — usually at a roadside café where you can buy a coffee or fresh juice. Air-conditioned, comfortable seats, your luggage in the back. Your trip leader rides with the group and points out things on the route. Day 4 (Taghazout → Essaouira, ~4 hours) is the same setup. Day 5 (Essaouira → Marrakech, ~3 hours) is a shared public bus rather than the group vehicle.

What if I want to upgrade to a private room or a private tour?

For Days 1 and 4 (Marrakech and Essaouira hotel nights), a single supplement is available — limited per departure, subject to availability, ~$120 for the two nights. Ask when booking. For Days 2 and 3 (surf camp), there is no single supplement — the camp does not have private rooms. If you want a fully private tour with private rooms throughout, this isn't the trip; see WPCMM5 (5-day Casa→Marrakech via Sahara, $1,099 per person sharing, fully private, no dormitories).

Will the trip pressure me to buy things at the argan cooperative?

No. The argan cooperative on Day 4 is roughly a 30-minute visit; you can buy a small bottle of oil (around 200 MAD for a 250ml culinary bottle) or paste if you want. About 30% of travellers buy nothing. Both are fine. The price is what the cooperative charges — no markup for us, no commission. Your trip leader is salaried, not commissioned, so there's no incentive to push purchases. We don't add carpet-shop stops or leather-souk detours on this trip.

What is included in the Day 4 Essaouira street food tasting?

You'll taste five items with your guide: harira (a spiced lentil and chickpea soup eaten across Morocco, especially at iftar during Ramadan), mesman (a layered semolina flatbread cooked on a griddle, sometimes with cumin or honey), Moroccan sweets (sellou, chebakia, or briouats depending on the season), olive oil from the south (typically Beni Mellal region), and Essaouira honey from the argan-tree zone (lighter and more floral than European honey). The tasting is at small medina vendors known to the guide. About 90 minutes, ends with mint tea. Vegetarian and vegan options are available — tell us when booking.

What should I pack for this trip?

Day-to-day clothing for warm coastal weather (shorts, T-shirts, sandals) plus one warm layer for evening surf-camp temperatures (it can drop to 12°C at night in winter, even on the coast). For surfing: a swimsuit or board shorts you don't mind getting sandy. Sunscreen (high SPF — Atlantic sun is strong), a reusable water bottle (tap water isn't recommended; the camp provides filtered water), flip-flops for the camp showers, a small dry bag for the beach. For Marrakech and Essaouira medina walks: comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, shoulders covered (T-shirt or above), legs covered to the knee. The surf camp provides linens; you don't need a sleeping bag. We send a full packing list when you book.

When is the best time of year for this trip?

March to June and September to November are ideal — warm days, manageable surf for all levels, mild evenings. July and August are hottest and busiest; the surf can be smaller in summer (good for beginners, less interesting for experienced surfers). December to February has the biggest swell of the year (best for experienced surfers, harder for first-timers) and cold-ish nights (down to 8–10°C at the camp). The trip runs year-round; ask us when booking what the surf looks like for your dates.

Is the public bus on Day 5 safe and comfortable?

Yes — Morocco's intercity coach network (Supratours and CTM are the main operators on this route) is comfortable, reliable, and used by Moroccans for daily travel. Air-conditioned coaches, assigned seating, luggage stored under the bus, one toilet stop on the 3-hour route. Your trip leader pre-books your seats so the group sits together. Wi-Fi is sometimes available, sometimes not. The buses are clean and run on time within roughly 15 minutes. This is how Moroccans get between Essaouira and Marrakech, and it's safe — busy with locals, families, students, and other tourists.
